For most, studying abroad is a brand-new experience in a place they’ve never been. But for Emmanuel Agbagba, that wasn’t exactly the case. In fact, he was in some quite familiar territory.
Finding ETSU
Agbagba is a graduate student from Accra, Ghana, studying counseling. Not long after earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Ghana, he discovered East Tennessee State University while researching schools online and quickly realized it was a great fit.
“I chose ETSU for its serene environment and strong counseling program,” he said, “because of my passion for supporting children and teens.”
Being an international student at ETSU
Agbagba dove right in from the moment he arrived in Johnson City. From taking counseling classes and working with his cohort and professors to serving as president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, Shades of Africa and Tennis Clubs, he's built an impressive resume in just a couple of years, all thousands of miles away from home.
“My experience as an international student has been positive and transformative, rigorous and rewarding,” he said. “Adjusting to a new academic system and culture came with challenges, but those challenges strengthened my resilience.”
How studying abroad enriched the international experience
In May 2025, Agbagba returned to Ghana as part of a study abroad trip with the Center for Global Engagement. On the trip, he served as a cultural and linguistic bridge for his peers as they visited local landmarks and schools, which allowed him to see the place where he grew up in a new light.
“Being in my home country with a group where many had never been was a powerful and meaningful experience. It allowed me to see Ghana through a different perspective and reinforced the value of intercultural learning,” Agbagba said.
He’s already applying some of what he learned during that trip on campus before he graduates in May. He’s confident it will follow him into his career.
“I was reminded that effective counseling and leadership must be rooted in respect for individuals’ cultural contexts, by creating inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity,” he said. “As a school counselor, I plan to integrate culturally responsive practices to ensure that every student feels seen, valued and empowered.”
ETSU deeply values hands-on learning for all students, whether they’re studying abroad, conducting groundbreaking research or securing competitive internships.
