East Tennessee State University’s residency program at ETSU Health Family Medicine Bristol received one of the highest honors during The Business Journal of Tri-Cities TN/VA’s 2025 Healthcare Heroes Awards Ceremony.

The Business Journal awarded the program the “Cup of Kindness Community Service Award.”

Each year, the Business Journal honors individuals and organizations that “go above and beyond the call of duty in the provision of healthcare in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia."

The honorees are announced in the August issue of the magazine. “Cup of Kindness” awards are presented in five categories.

Healing Hands Health, an organization that assists individuals with limited insurance, nominated Family Medicine Bristol’s residency program for the award “in recognition of their exceptional partnership and lasting impact on our mission to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to individuals in our region who are underserved.”

Helen Scott, Healing Hands’ executive director, wrote that Bristol residency program has provided more than 1,600 patient encounters that represent “high-quality, whole-person care to approximately 500 uninsured individuals who may otherwise have gone without access to medical services.

“The residents’ consistent presence, genuine compassion, and clinical excellence have helped restore dignity and hope to those who often feel invisible in the health care system,” Scott wrote.

The endeavor is spearheaded by Family Medicine Bristol faculty physician and Quillen College of Medicine graduate, Dr Kelsey Lloyd, who serves as the medical director for Healing Hands.

The Bristol Family Medicine Residency Program is led by Dr. Elizabeth White and includes eight faculty physicians who oversee the resident physicians’ patient care. Resident physicians have graduated from medical school and are completing specialized postgraduate training. All serve at ETSU Health Family Medicine Bristol, providing comprehensive primary care for all ages.
