Rebuilding after a disaster takes more than hope. It takes resources, strategy and collaboration.

That’s the goal of “Hope After Helene: A Forum on Financing Disaster Recovery,” hosted by East Tennessee State University’s College of Business and Technology on Friday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Powell Recital Hall in the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts.

The event will bring together residents, businesses leaders, policymakers and financial leaders to explore actionable solutions for rebuilding and revitalization in communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The event is free and open to the public, and registration is required. Sign up through ETSU’s ticketing site.

Hurricane Helene, which struck in late 2024, caused widespread devastation across the region. Kevin Kilgore, professor of practice in the Department of Economics and Finance at ETSU and event organizer, created the forum as a platform for long-term recovery collaboration.

“Attendees will hear from representatives of various finance sources with ideas to help communities impacted by Hurricane Helene rebuild, recover and revitalize,” said Kilgore. “They will have access to people who can help, and we hope they learn something from this opportunity. The Center for the Study of Finance and the College of Business and Technology are here to help.”

The day begins with a light breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by the program at 8:30 a.m.

Scheduled topics and speakers include:

Dr. Jon Smith, ETSU professor of economics, on the economic impact of rebuilding

Brian Phipps, People Inc., on new market tax credits

BrightBridge Capital on SBA 504 lending and small business recovery

Pathway Lending on housing solutions and long-term development

A panel discussion with political and community leaders is also being planned to address local impact and future strategies. Attendees will have the chance to connect directly with presenters and resource providers throughout the event.

The Center for the Study of Finance, housed within ETSU’s College of Business and Technology, is committed to advancing financial literacy, economic development and community engagement.

“The ETSU College of Business and Technology is focused on empowering students, staff, faculty and external stakeholders to achieve personal and professional success,” said Dr. Tony Pittarese, dean of the college. “It is our hope that this forum will assist business owners in the region in their ongoing recovery efforts.”
