If you explore the ETSU Online website, you may notice this short paragraph at the top of some of the pages:

East Tennessee State University offers online and mostly online programs. Some programs include field work experiences; please check the program page for specific requirements.

What is field work?

Field work is a broad term used to describe hands-on requirements within certain programs of study.  Field work may also be referred to as an internship, practicum, clinical, or apprenticeship. Field work is often a culminating experience where you will get to apply what you’ve learned in a professional setting. This allows you to put theory into practice by providing hands-on experience, further developing professional skills, and fulfilling graduation requirements.

Can an “all online” program require field work?

At ETSU, yes. When an online program requires field work, the courses are still online. The field work itself, however, is completed at an approved site. (More on that below.)

When a program is considered all online, that means all required coursework can be completed in one of two online ways: asynchronous or synchronous.

  • Asynchronous online classes don’t meet at scheduled times. Nearly all work is completed independently through ETSU’s learning system, the Desire2Learn (D2L) platform. This is the most common format, and you can expect the majority of all coursework to be asynchronous. In many programs, coursework is exclusively asynchronous providing greater flexibility!
  • Synchronous online classes require you to log in at designated times from a computer. Sessions may be held live through tools like Zoom or Panopto. Recordings are typically available for review afterward. You are encouraged to check the course details and contact the department or instructor with questions about meeting expectations.

Examples of online programs that require field work include Social Work (BSW and MSW), Human Services, Educational Leadership, Global Sport Leadership, and Nursing (MSN, DNP). Each ETSU Online program page has a program overview summary that indicates whether field work is required. Check out the example below:

Do I have to come to campus or Johnson City for field work requirements?

For most programs, field work can be completed in your home community without the need to come to campus, or even to Johnson City. Academic advisors or department staff can assist in identifying and coordinating a placement opportunity that is in or near where you live.
