You’re never too old to dress up and enjoy the moment, especially when there’s a glowing orb involved.

The Digital Media Midpoint Sorting Event within the College of Business and Technology is redefining student engagement and retention. Born out of a desire to enhance the student experience, the event celebrates digital media students who have passed their midpoint portfolio review, which is the criterion for entry into the full digital media program.

Donning wizard robes, the occasional fairy costume, and fantasy hats, students gather as “The Orb” sorts them into their chosen concentrations: animation, visualization, game design, or visual effects. While this moment is celebrated, it also includes a handshake with their mentor, who will guide them through the remainder of the program and connects peers within their concentration.

“Our community is supportive and continuously striving for excellence,” said Dr. Todd Emma, Chair of Digital Media. ”Every mid-point student is expected to learn from the class before them, always pushing to be better.”  

Being a college student can be challenging, but events like this encourage students, build community, and show that there is still room for creativity, fun, connection, and a little magic along the way.
