ETSU’s 2025 holiday ornament celebrates Roy S. Nicks Hall, honoring its transformation from Sherrod Library into a center for nursing, technology, and Appalachian scholarship.

A building that once housed books now nurtures nurses and scholars. This year’s ETSU holiday ornament celebrates that transformation, and the enduring legacy of service it represents.

The fourth issue of East Tennessee State University’s limited-edition ornament series features Roy S. Nicks Hall, home to ETSU’s College of Nursing, the Department of Appalachian Studies, Information Technology Services and more.

Hand-painted by local artists Penny Livingston of Elizabethton and Akintayo Akintobi of Johnson City, the ornament honors both a building and the man it commemorates: Dr. Roy Nicks, ETSU president emeritus and a transformative leader in higher education.

Why does Roy S. Nicks Hall matter?

The building tells a story of evolution and adaptation. What began as Sherrod Library – the intellectual heart of campus for generations of students – has transformed into a hub for nursing education, Appalachian scholarship and technological innovation.

The building honors Nicks, whose presidency shaped modern ETSU and whose commitment to accessible, quality education continues to influence the university's mission.

Who are the artists behind this year's ornament?

Livingston, an Elizabethton-based artist and muralist who has painted glass ornaments for more than three decades, returns to the series this year. She is joined by Akintobi of Johnson City, bringing together regional artistic talent to celebrate a campus landmark.

Each ornament is hand-painted, making every piece unique while maintaining the design that honors Nicks Hall’s distinctive architecture.

Where can I purchase the 2025 ornament?

The limited-edition ornament is available in Johnson City for $125 at: Bowman Jewelers, 401 W. Oakland Ave.
