This weekend is prime time for experiencing Appalachian fall color, with East Tennessee State University experts reporting excellent conditions developing across the region’s tallest peaks.
“This weekend I think you will still need to go to the highest elevations, but the colors should be developing nicely in the 4,500 to 5,500-foot elevations,” said Travis Watson, ETSU’s campus arborist. “It would be a great weekend to get out and do some hiking.”
The timing couldn’t be better. Cooler temperatures and recent rainfall have created ideal conditions for vibrant color development in the weeks ahead.
Expert picks: where to go
When it comes to fall’s best display, ETSU’s foliage experts highlight well-known gems and hidden treasures.
Watson called the Blue Ridge Parkway unbeatable, while also pointing to Beauty Spot in Unicoi for panoramic views and Roan Mountain’s Grassy Bald on clear days. He added that Pond Mountain Wilderness and scenic overlooks along Interstate 26 are also excellent choices.
Dr. Andrew Joyner, Tennessee’s state climatologist and ETSU associate professor, recommended Laurel Fork Falls and Dennis Cove along the Appalachian Trail, plus Rocky Fork and Roan Mountain state parks. He also highlighted Beaverdam Creek near Shady Valley.

What you’ll see
At the optimal 4,500 to 5,500-foot range, expect rich displays as hickories, poplars, birches and walnuts show off golden yellows, while cherries, dogwoods and maples provide vibrant reds, purples and oranges. The color is developing consistently across these elevations, making this weekend through next week the ideal window for high-elevation adventures.
Lower elevations will follow in the coming weeks as temperatures continue to cool and shorter daylight hours trigger color changes across a broader range of altitudes.
