East Tennessee State University is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For® program.
This is the second year in a row that ETSU has earned this recognition. For the first time, ETSU was also named to the Great Colleges Honor Roll, a status granted to only 42 colleges each year that are highlighted most across the recognition categories.
The results, released recently in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 199 colleges and universities. In all, 76 of those institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies.
Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with ETSU included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students.
ETSU won honors in five categories this year – up from three last year:
• Job Satisfaction and Support
• Professional Development
• Mission and Pride
• Faculty and Staff Well-being
• Shared Governance
“This recognition as one of the best colleges to work for, along with our inclusion on the Great Colleges Honor Roll, affirms the hard work and commitment of our entire university community,” said ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland. “In the last year, we have enhanced faculty and staff salaries, expanded professional development opportunities, and worked to deepen pride in our institution. These efforts aim to ensure that ETSU remains a place where everyone is supported, valued, and empowered to contribute to the success of our students and our community.”
The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institution questionnaire that captures employment data and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was employee feedback.
